WTA’s ranking system should be revised

Dinara - World No.1

Well, i know this is a clumsy topic with diversified opinions and criticisms. Being a huge tennis fan, i personally believe that the No. 1 spot held by Dinara Safina is an absolute ridicule. No one can deny dinara’s tenacity and the amount of sweat she puts in with her career graph in the peaking range for the past 10 months. She has been very solid in her performances reaching semis and finals almost in the majority of the tournaments she faced with great consistency. But the enigma is that she completely loses the plot when it comes to the biggies. Venus exhibited disdainful strokes in Wimbledon semis match against her with a 6-1, 6-0 demolition which recorded as one of the worst defeats in a grandslam semis.  The other outcomes 6-0, 6-3 in the Australian Open against williams and 6-4, 6-2 against a highly inconsistent Svetlana doesn’t show up good numbers, failing to defend her spot. All these straight-set defeats justifies the speculation over her no.1 position. Even one of her most praised virtue, consistency, gets a beating reading these results. Grand Slams as the name infers are the grand daddies of the tournaments generating high intensity atmospheres and posting tremendous pressure upon the players during the plays. Winning in those tournaments could be made looking easy by the likes of bored-of-winining-federer and his monopoly in men’s tennis. But it isn’t the same story with everybody.

Serena with three slam titles in her pocket certainly deserves the top spot despite failing to claim a WTA title. WTA should seriously think about redesigning their ranking system implementing robust ranking algorithms to produce better results and to avoid such speculations.
