So today I decided to install Windows 8 in my PC which is running Windows 7 x64. I want to install it as a guest operating system and hence I decided to use Virtual Box as I’m already using it for running Windows Server 2008.
Luckily I chose Virtual Box, for I saw lot of posts in the web describing issues installing Windows 8 in VMWare or Virtual PC. But unfortunately Virtual Box also caused couple of issues which really tested my patience a lot. After some perseverance and little bit of Googling I was able to find the solutions for the issues.
So the CHECK POINTS -
1. While creating a new Virtual Disk in Virtual Box you have to choose the type of OS to be Windows 7 x64 and not Windows 7. Otherwise the guest system will crash and spit in your face.
2. After you create the disk make sure you remove the SATA controller from the storage settings of the disk and add the .vdi file to IDE Controller. If you are not done with this setting you’ll get the below BSOD error. But we can’t call it a death screen as it is looking prettier.
You can search for the error online: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (storachi.sys)
Recommended Settings -
Minimum 1 GB Memory & 20 GB HDD
Once you are done with them the installation should be a cake walk. I’ve provided some screen shots below. Check them.
Well if you don’t know what Chromium OS is you must be living under a rock, seriously. You have to watch the video below.
I came across this post explaining how to install Chromium OS in your mac/PC. But the download link mentioned in the post was no longer working as GDGT have mentioned they no longer host the Chromium builds and the reason they stated was -
We hosted Chrome OS for almost a year, but with its official launch coming up soon (and the fact that the fine folks at Hexxeh have done a much better job with their Chrome OS images) it seemed like the right time to take it offline.
So why do you wait? I went to Hexxeh (pronounced as heck-see) to check for the chromium build and I was welcomed by the page displaying “Flow”, as they say, for the Chromim OS build they have created. It was actually a 17 year old guy who ‘pretends’ to be a web developer/programmer. More about him and the Chromium OS here in the FAQ section.
Since I lost my USB long ago I selected the VMWare Image torrent from the downloads link section. This is because I’ve the VMWare already setup in my machine as I’ve been using it for hosting some virtual machines. You can actually create a live USB for Windows. The download is a tar.gz file which can be extracted by our mighty WinRar. The archive has two files, one .vmx file and one .vmdk file. The vmx files carries the VMWare virtual machine settings for the Chromium OS image and the vmdk file is the original image that hosts the Chromium OS. You can download the VMWare Server, which is of course a free application, to host your virtual machines from here. You need to register in the website to get a free key for installing VMWare Server in your machine. Installing the VMWare server will create the web access icon for the VMWare Server Management Console in your desktop. Opening that link will take you to a login page. Here you need to enter a valid username/password of a windows account which has admin rights. Note that the password is must and cannot be empty. But most of the home users would never like to keep a password for their default account. So do I. So I created a new windows account with administrative privileges just for logging into VMWare.
Now you have to add the .vmx file that has been extracted to the VMWare Server. For that you have to copy both the .vmx and vmdk files to the datacenter of VMWare Server. This is most commonly the ‘Virtual Machines’ folder that has been created by the VMWare in the root of your installation disk. For example, if you have installed VMWare in your F: drive in the path ‘F:\Softwares\VMWare’ the Virtual Machines folder is created in the root of F drive; i.e in the path F:\Virtual Machines.
After you have copied the files choose Virtual Machine -> Add Virtual Machine to the Inventory.
Select the .vmx file and add it.
Now select the Chromium OS in the inventory on the left.
Choose ‘Generate Virtual Machine Shortcut’ from the commands section.
Click ‘Install Desktop Shortcut to ChromeOS’
Now the direct link to remoting into your Chrome OS is created in your desktop.
Double click it. And there you go, the most talked about Operating System running on your machine.
The default username is facepunch and the password is facepunch. Just log in and restart the virtual machine once. You should be able to log in with your Google account.
So what is it at the end of all this? This is just Google Chrome with a different colored logo . Okay, seriously, I don’t see the value of the OS yet as it’s hardware support is very poor right now. But it still supports WIFI for now to connect a network. And the speed? It is lightning fast as it doesn’t need to load the bios, OS Kernel services, Hardware drivers etc. But still way to go. You can also check the Keyboard commands page for the Chromium. But as we know, Google make wonders (Except Google Wave. Never know why Google Wave was an epic fail. It was an exciting idea!). Let’s wait for their official launch and check out what they have for us.

அப்படி என்ன செய்து விட்டார்?
அது நினைத்துபார்கவும் முடியாத கருணை செயல்.
தான் யார் என்றே அறியாத சித்த சுவாதீனம் கொண்ட மனிதர்களை நாம் சிறு கருணையுடனும் அல்லது கொஞ்சம் அருவருப்புடனும் கடந்து செல்வோம். சில சமயம் காசு போடுவோம். அதற்கும் மேல் என்ன செய்வோம்? அதை மறக்க முயற்சிப்போம். ஆனால் இவர் அவர்களை தேடி சென்று தினமும் மூன்று வேளை உணவு தருகிறார். அருவருப்பில்லாமல் ஊட்டி விடுகிறார்.கடந்த எட்டு வருடங்களாக ஒரு நாள் தவறாமல் இந்த சேவையை இவர் தொடர்ந்து செய்து வருகிறார். மழை, புயல்,தேர்தல்,கலவரம், பந்த் என்று எதுவும் பாராமல் வருடம் முழுக்க இந்த சேவையை செய்து வருகிறார். தினமும் 400 பேருக்கு மூன்று வேளை உணவு என்பது சாதாரணம் இல்லை. இது வரை ஒரு கோடியே இருபது லட்சம் உணவு பொட்டலங்கள் விநியோகிக்கபட்டுள்ளது.
ஒரு ஐந்து நட்சத்திர ஹோட்டலில் வேலை பார்த்த, விருதுகள் வென்ற செப் சமையல் கலை வல்லுநர் இவர். சுவிட்சர்லாந்தில் ஒரு பெரிய ஹோட்டல் நிறுவனத்தில் வேலை கிடைத்தவுடன் அதை பெற்றோர்களிடம் சொல்லிவிட்டு போவதற்காக மதுரைக்கு வந்தவர் அங்கே ஒரு வயது முதிர்ந்த ஒரு கிழவர் மலத்தை உணவாக உண்ணும் அவலத்தை கண்டு பெரும் அதிர்ச்சிக்குள்ளாகி தனது வெளிநாட்டு வேலையை துறந்து மதுரையிலேயே தங்கி வீட்டில் சமைத்து அதை இது போன்ற மனிதர்களை தேடி சென்று உணவு கொடுக்க ஆரம்பிக்கிறார். இது நடந்தது 2002 . இன்றும் இவரது சேவை தொடர்கிறது மதுரையை சுற்றி நூறு கிலோமீட்டர் பரப்பளவில் கண்ணில் படும் இதுபோன்ற மனிதர்களை தேடிபிடித்து உணவு தருகிறார். இதற்காக இவர் தன்னுடைய வாழ்கையை முழுமையாக அர்பணித்துள்ளார். இவரது அன்னை இவர் குறித்து கவலை பட்டு அழுதபோது, “அம்மா ஒரு நாள் என்னோடு வாங்க. நான் என்ன செய்கிறேன் என்று பாருங்கள் அப்புறம் நீங்கள் சொல்வதை கேட்கிறேன்” என்று சொல்லி அழைத்து போயிருக்கிறார். இவரது சேவையை கண்டு மனம் உருகிய அந்த தாய் ” நீ இவர்களை பார்த்துக்கொள், நான் உள்ளவரை உன்னை பார்த்துகொள்கிறேன்” என்று சொல்லிருக்கிறார். இதை படித்த போது என் கண்களில் நீர் முட்டிக்கொண்டு வந்ததை அடக்க முடியாமல் தவித்தேன். எழுதும் இந்த கணமும் கூட.
நாம் இங்கே நம்மை ஏமாற்றும் திரை நட்சத்திரங்களை ஹீரோ என்று சொல்லி தலையில் வைத்து கொண்டாடுகிறோம். பாலபிசேகம் முதல் முளைப்பாரி வரை எண்ணற்ற பைத்தியகாரத்தனத்தை அந்த ஹீரோக்களுக்காக செய்கிறோம். முதல் நாள் அவர்கள் படங்களை பார்க்க ஆயிரம், இரண்டாயிரம் செலவழிக்க தயங்குவதில்லை. சரி கொடுகிரீர்கள் அந்த அளவுக்கு உரித்தான கலைபடைப்பையாவது அவர்கள் தருகிறார்களா? அவர்கள் என்ன செய்தார்கள். நானும் கொடை செய்கிறேன் என்று சொல்லி சிலவற்றை செய்து பத்திரிகைகளில் மறக்காமல் செய்தி கொடுக்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் இவரின் கால் தூசுக்கு கூட பொருந்த மாட்டார்கள். இவர் தான் உண்மையான ஹீரோ. சாகசம் செய்வது சாதனை அல்ல. இல்லாதவர்க்கு தேடிசென்று ஈவதே சாதனை. எனக்கு இவர் தான் என்றென்றும் ஹீரோ. இவரை பார்க்கவும், இவருடன் புகைப்படம் எடுத்துகொள்ளவும், இவருடன் ஒரு நாள் இருந்து சிறு உதவியேனும் செய்யவும், பொருள் உதவி செய்யவும், இவரை பற்றி எழுதவும் பேசவும் பெரும் ஆவல் கொள்கிறேன், பெரும் பெருமை கொள்கிறேன் எனது ஹீரோ ஒரு மகத்தானவன் என்பதில்.
இதுவரை இந்த பெருமைக்குரிய விஷயம் பத்திரிக்கைகளில் பரவலாக வரவில்லை என்பது பெருத்த வேதனை மட்டுமல்ல ஒரு தமிழனாக நம் எல்லோருக்கும் அவமானம். இதை பதிவர்கள் எல்லோரும் கொண்டு சேர்க்க வேண்டுமாய் தாழ்மையுடன் கேட்டுகொள்கிறேன்
Okie, if still there is someone who is clicking my blog link 64 times a day and anxiously looking for some stupid post, here it is! Howdy! Okay, i see no one. I’ve been going through some ridiculously ridiculoust ridiculous daily routines (i suck in grammar) where i spend 60% of the time at my work place, 15% at my home on my work again, 5% on just thinking of it in my bed, 2% on just thinking not to think about it and the remaining in my sleep. Don’t do some stupid math and say it sums up to 25.6 hours a day. I would least hesitate to curse you. But i do keep reading some blogs regularly to rejuvenate the self.
